You do not need special software to invoice in Bitcoin. You need a normal invoice, a way to get paid, and a clear rule for the exchange rate. This guide is for freelancers, developers, creators and small studios.
Step 1: Keep the price in euros
Most clients budget in euros, and most accountants work in euros. So keep the price in euros, and use Bitcoin as the way to pay. The deal then stays clear, even if the Bitcoin price changes before the client pays.
Step 2: Choose how the client pays
| Method | Who sets the amount | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Lightning address ([email protected]) | The client | Most invoices. One line you can reuse |
| Lightning invoice made in Kute | You, in sats | An exact amount, paid now |
| Bitcoin address | The client | Large amounts you want to keep as savings |
| Bank transfer into Kute | Not yet | Coming soon, with a bank account, IBAN and card |
For most freelancers, the Lightning address is the easy choice. It fits on one line, the client's wallet asks for the amount, and the money arrives in seconds. Read what a Lightning address is if it is new to you.
Step 3: Set the exchange rate rule
Pick one rule and write it on the invoice. A simple rule: the client pays the euro amount in Bitcoin, at the market rate at the time of payment. If you prefer an exact number, there is another way. When the client is ready to pay, make a Lightning invoice in Kute for an exact amount of sats. One Bitcoin is 100,000,000 sats, so small amounts are easy to write.
Step 4: Use this template
- Invoice number, date, your name and your client's name, as usual.
- The work, and the price in euros.
- Payment line: "Pay in Bitcoin over Lightning to [email protected]."
- Rate line: "At the market rate at the time of payment."
- Due date, and your other payment options.
Step 5: Keep a record
When the payment arrives, it shows in Activity in Kute. Write down the date, the amount in sats and the euro value at that time, next to the invoice number. The rules to record Bitcoin income are different in each country. Ask your accountant how to record it where you live.
Want part of it in dollars?
Some people keep part of each payment in dollars. In Kute, Dollars sit next to your Bitcoin. You can move between the two, and the app shows the quote and fees before you confirm (Google Play listing).
What if my client only pays by bank?
For now, you still need a bank account for that client. A Kute bank account, IBAN and card are coming soon. See how Kute compares with bank apps in Kute vs Revolut and Kute vs Wise.
