Hot wallet vs hardware wallet: using a Ledger next to your everyday balance

Short answer. Use both. A hot wallet on your phone is for everyday money: you get paid, pay people and use Lightning. A hardware wallet keeps your keys on a separate device. It suits savings that you rarely touch. Kute lets you see both side by side.

A hot wallet keeps its keys on a device that is online, usually your phone. That makes it fast and easy. A hardware wallet keeps its keys on a small, separate device. The device signs payments and never gives the keys to your phone or computer. That makes it slower, and harder to attack.

You would not carry all your savings in your pocket. The same idea works for Bitcoin: keep a spending balance on your phone and your savings on a hardware wallet.

Which hardware wallets work with Kute?

Ledger, Blockstream Jade, Keystone, Krux, Passport and SeedSigner (Kute FAQ). A Ledger connects over Bluetooth. Jade connects over Bluetooth or QR. Keystone, Krux and SeedSigner use QR codes. You can also paste the xpub of a wallet to follow it in watch-only mode. An xpub is a public key that shows balances but cannot spend.

Using a Ledger next to your everyday balance

  1. Pair your Ledger in Kute. It shows up as its own wallet, next to your spending wallet.
  2. Decide on a spending balance for your phone, for example one month of costs. Keep the rest on the Ledger.
  3. To save, send Bitcoin from your spending wallet to the Bitcoin address of your Ledger. For on-chain payments, you pick fast, medium or slow speed and see the fee first.
  4. Check the receiving address on the Ledger screen before you send.
  5. To spend from the Ledger, build the payment in Kute. Then confirm it on the Ledger. Kute checks that the device signed the same payment that you reviewed.

Kute also refuses a signature from a different Ledger than the one you paired. Your Ledger keys never leave the Ledger.

Why not keep everything on the hardware wallet?

Everyday money needs to move fast. A client pays your Lightning address while your Ledger is in a drawer at home. You pay a collaborator from a café. That is what the hot wallet is for. Our guides on how to receive a Lightning payment and how to pay a collaborator in Bitcoin show the daily side.

How this compares with other apps

Ledger Live is a great companion app to hold Bitcoin. Kute pairs with Ledger and adds a spending wallet on your phone, with Lightning. See Kute vs Ledger Live and Kute vs BlueWallet for the full tables.
